Sprog the Younger is the kid that will not sleep. So the other night I dusted off this bedtime story, a gift from a mate to mark the birth of Sprog the Elder a few years back. Don’t judge; Sprog is far too young to get the blue language, which I mutter under my breath anyway, and my reasoning is if I’m not sleeping, and can’t go running, I might as well be having a chuckle.
Written by Adam Mansbach and illustrated by Richard Cortés, there are no prizes for guessing what Go The F**k To Sleep is all about. What I love (and identify with completely) is how the narrator’s desperation builds with every page. The illustrations are great too. A favourite is one of the sleep averse kid playing bongos in a mountain glade as black clouds tower in the background.
The flowers dose in the meadows
And high on the mountains so steep.
My life is a failure. I’m a terrible parent.
Stop fucking with me, please, and sleep.
I love this book. And, as you can see from his face (above), so does Sprog. But does it help get him to sleep? Does it f**k…
Love your kid’s amusement juxtaposed to your bemusement 😇
