Pork scratchings and pouched meals: How I levelled my blood sugar and lost a stone

IMG_0421-1For the past month, nearly every meal I’ve eaten has come in a pouch and been slopped into a bowl after being nuked in a microwave. My saturated fat intake has rocketed. Every day I’ve had a glass of full fat milk. For breakfast I’ve had full fat Greek yoghurt. I’ve had vegetables fried in butter and served with double cream. It’s been glorious. Best of all were the pork scratchings; I’ve been tucking into a bag of them nearly every day.

And guess what? I feel the best I’ve felt in ages. My blood sugar levels have been consistently between four and eight mmol/l (that’s 72 to 144 mg/dl). I’ve had no hypos and my Insulin dosage has reduced drastically. I’ve lost a stone (well, almost; about 12 lbs). I’ve kicked starchy carbs and caffeine and cut down on the booze (the aim was to kick it, but nothing goes better with scratchings than a cold beer). What’s more, I’ve rarely been hungry and the pouched meals are delicious.

This is all thanks to The Natural Ketosis Co. I was roped into trying their diet by the Mrs, who was writing a feature on it for a paper. And I’m glad I was. It’s transformed the way I approach managing my blood sugar levels. Read my full review of the Natural Ketosis diet on the blog next week.

Sounds Atkins diet like, is it?

Hi Runrodrun! Yes; Natural Ketosis Co give Atkins much credit for his role in founding the low carb (‘not no carb’) tradition. Must confess, I’m still somewhat worried about the consequences of so much fat… What are your thoughts?

Hey there! I have never been on the Natural Ketosis program so I want to be clear that I am not saying anything about their program.

What I will relate is my experience with a high protein, high fat, low carb diet. I lost a lot of weight. Had terrible endurance (I played tennis back then and was not a runner. But I clearly remember blowing a lead in a tennis match because I had no energy). On top of all this my cholesterol climbed to a point where I was close to being put on meds. The diet I was on did not work for me.

This is not to discourage you as your diet could be very different than the one I was on over 10 years ago. For one thing the advancements in science, diet, and nutrition have undoubtedly grown significantly. I would encourage you to follow the path that works for you, consult your doctor, and go from there.

And I look forward to learning more in your review and following your progress 😃

Thanks for getting back to me; interesting stuff. I feel that my energy levels have improved with this diet, though this could be related to diabetes and avoiding the peaks and troughs you get with higher carb intake. Cholesterol is my biggest concern about the diet. I will be asking the Natural Ketosis Co about this before I do the review. Thanks for following me and for the feedback!
